Causal Factors of Technology Addiction in Students' Study Habits

In today's world of education, the digital age has evolved and become an important part of everyday life. Students are becoming increasingly dependent on the use of technology as a means of learning. Technology provides benefits and advantages for its users, especially students, but behind it there are also challenges found. It turns out that information and communication technology equipment has a negative impact on its users which arises as a result of the wrong or irresponsible use of those who use it (Ratnaya, 2011). For this reason, it is important to know the factors that cause technology addiction because this can have a negative impact that disrupts the learning process. This essay will outline the reasons why technology is responsible for the breakdown of students' study habits due to the easy access to information, the attractiveness of online content, and the dependence on digital academic tools.

The first factor is that easy access to information can reduce student productivity. Information both academic and non-academic is quickly found using technology, thus providing comfort to them. However, this convenience can have a negative impact on the learning process. Students can get answers in a short period of time to questions they want to know, without putting in the effort to study hard by reading many sources. It shows that the use of technology actually makes students lazy to learn (Damayanti et al., 2020). This causes a lack of student productivity in the learning process because it relies on technology that already provides varied information.

The second challenge in education is that technology offers tantalizing content that can distract students' focus and concentration. Today's digital technology has developed rapidly and powerfully by displaying a wide variety of attention-grabbing entertainment. However, it is unfortunate that this has become a major source of hindrance to student learning. Students lose attention to learning when using technological devices such as smartphones or computers because they are distracted by online content. Recently, Agit et al. (2023) indicated that the adverse effects created by excessive use of technology have the potential to reduce the quality of student learning, this is because students spend a lot of time using smartphones, which then reduces the ability to concentrate in the learning process. Therefore, it is quite a challenge in this era to maintain students' concentration when on the other hand they have the desire to view videos and images on social media or websites during the learning process.

The last reason is that students' dependence on digital academic tools has led to a lack of critical thinking skills and decreased creativity. Digital tools are often used by students for academic purposes, making them dependent on these tools. This dependence on digital tools can be a barrier for students in practicing critical thinking skills. In addition, the decline in students' creativity in doing assignments is also a result of the use of technology, because they are resigned to the answers provided which creates limited space for innovative thinking. Therefore, these tools should be used as a support for the learning process rather than a substitute.

In conclusion, the widespread problem of addiction to technology in students is due to various factors, namely easy access to information, attractive online content, and dependence on digital tools. These factors have created a threat to students' study habits. Therefore, it is necessary to remind and instill in students the wise use of technology. By ensuring that students use technology well, the negative impacts that may arise can be minimized. So, as educators, it would be better to provide direction, monitoring, and restrictions so that students can use technology responsibly.
